Our History

Front Entrance SunsetMany years ago, John and Marie Messina embarked upon an adventure and a dream: to build a premier indoor tennis facility in Westchester… and have it turn a profit! And so they did.

In 1974, Sound Shore Indoor Tennis came to be: six indoor climate-controlled courts, lounge with huge fieldstone fireplace, locker rooms, child care room, pro shop, front desk and offices. It was a grand husband-and-wife partnership, built on mutual respect and industry. John focused on the planning and building aspects while Marie managed the daily operations.

Three years later, they built a second building housing four more indoor courts, another lounge with a kitchen, two bathrooms, and connected it to the first building. This brought the number of courts to ten. But they were not done yet. Two years later, the last two courts were added and our campus was complete.

Sadly, John passed away in 1982, shortly after his 60th birthday. Marie forged ahead, working full-time to continue the legacy. Two of John and Marie’s three daughters have joined Sound Shore Indoor Tennis over the years. JoAnn was employed from 1990 to 2004. Angela joined them in 1999 and is currently the Managing Director.

Marie, at age 87, was still here, greeting players, doing bookkeeping, full of the same enthusiasm, drive and delight as on day one, thirty seven years ago.  She passed on July 25, 2015.image-36

John and Marie’s legacy continues…45 years and counting!
