Our staff of full and part-time tennis professionals have trained in eight different countries, competing on both the college and professional tours. Most are certified by the USPTA or USPTR. Their expertise as players, teachers and coaches offer each student an opportunity to reach their full potential.
Dale M. Balun
Director of Tennis, Sound Shore Indoor Tennis
Dale has established an excellent reputation as a gifted teacher and professional. As Director of Tennis at Sound Shore Indoor Tennis for many years, she has assembled one of the best tennis staffs in the area. She has trained many sectionally and nationally ranked players and has “turned on” thousands of people to the joys of playing tennis.
Dale was born and raised in Yonkers, NY. She attended Smith College and the University of Texas at Austin. She played varsity tennis for both schools and graduated from Smith with a BA in Political Science. She was runner up in the Ivy League Doubles Championships and formerly ranked #1 in the East in Doubles. She won several mixed doubles titles as well.
After graduation Dale worked at College Racquet Club. She taught tennis and squash at Concordia College and was Assistant Men’s and Women’s Tennis coach. From there, Dale was named Director of Tennis at Coveleigh Club-one of the first women to run a club. After seven summers at Coveleigh she accepted a summer position of Director of Tennis at Old Oaks Country Club, which she ran for many years.
In addition to building one of the largest Junior and Adult Clinic programs in the East, Dale was named USPTA Eastern Pro of the Year. She has given clinics for the ETA, USPTA and has been honored by the Special Olympics, YWCA, Cystic Fibrosis, and ETA for her volunteer work. She was the Co-Director of the Nike ATP Smash Tennis Clinics at Central Park which featured Jimmy Connors.
Senior Pro, USPTA
Alex is known to be a fierce competitor whether in the juniors, college, satellites, or senior division.
He is the Director of the highly successful Men’s Leagues at Sound Shore Indoor Tennis, offering competition five nights per week for 3.5 to 5.0 players.
Alex was trained in Brazil and attended Auburn University graduating with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He was named to the All SEC team and was the assistant coach at Auburn. He played satellites and the ATP tour. Alex was also the travelling coach for the #1 women’s tennis player in Brazil. In addition to his extensive experience as a teacher and coach in Brazil and the United States, Alex has continued competing in local and national events. His achievements include: USPTA Eastern Male Player of the Year, National 35′s Grass Court Singles Champion, and US National 35′s Team member for the World Cup. Alex is presently the Director of Tennis at Larchmont Shore Club.
Senior Pro, USPTR
Larss is known for his strong ability to “break down a stroke” and keen sense of strategy and tactics.
He was born and raised in the Boston area. He attended the University of Tennessee, where he played DI tennis and earned a BA in Business Management.
Upon graduation, he played on the satellite circuit before starting a teaching career. Larss ran several programs in New England before relocating to New York and has taught at Old Oaks, the Fila Club and Sunningdale Country Club. He is currently Head Pro at New Rochelle Tennis.
Senior Pro, USPTA
Chris brings tremendous energy and enthusiasm to all his lessons regardless of age or ability.
He directs many of the Varsity Training programs at Sound Shore Indoor Tennis, helping many juniors prepare for high school competition.
Chris is from the Westchester area and graduated from Pace University with a BA in Business Administration. He played #1 singles and doubles for the DI Pace team and was also the captain. Chris has a strong background having worked at Beach Point, Future Stars and the Hamptons. He is presently the Director of Tennis at Fenway Golf Club and is a member of the Wilson Advisory Staff.
Women’s League Director
Bea has been an avid tennis player since the early 90′s, competing and captaining in the summer MITL leagues as well as several USTA teams over the last 18 years. She is currently the captain of a Southern Westchester 4.0 USTA team.
Bea graduated from Amherst College with a Biology degree. She has worked for the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and is a graduate of an ultrasound program as well.
Men’s League Director, USPTA
High Intensity Training Director
Harold was born and raised in Haiti where he attained a ranking of #4 in the country. He played satellite tournaments and was named the assistant coach of the Davis Cup team. In this position, he worked with talented juniors and traveled with them to international tournaments.
Harold began his teaching career in Florida where he worked with renowned coaches, Juan Nunez and Rick Macci. He then moved to New York where he served for 14 years as Director of Tennis at Jefferson Valley. In 2015, Harold was a touring coach at the circuit of Nimes, in southern France. He also coached top ranked juniors at the Orange Bowl in 2014-2016. Presently, Harold is an assistant pro at New Rochelle Tennis.
High Intensity Training Coach
He graduated from Wichita State University, where he played both singles and doubles. Tommy was a team captain and ranked #14 in NCAA doubles.
Tommy and his partner, Tin Ostojic, won the Richardson Invitational in Rye, NY in 2015. He spends the summer seasons at Apawamis Club. Tommy is a High Intensity Coach at Sound Shore, where he teaches adults and juniors as well.
Mark can be spotted by his “distinctive” handle bar moustache.
He grew up in Yonkers, New York and attended Lehman College where he played four years of varsity tennis. Mark has played in the Masters Division and served on the ETA adult ranking committee. Mark has been a tennis professional at the Eldorado, Westhampton Bath & Tennis, and Ridgeway Country Club. He is presently the assistant pro at Hampshire Country Club.
Roman was born and raised in Croatia where he competed on the Junior circuit. He was top 8 in the 18 and under, and was the national junior champion in 2003.
Roman received a tennis scholarship to New Mexico State University where he captained the tennis team and was top 25 in doubles in the NCAA. He received his MBA at NMSU. Roman is presently the assistant pro at Apawamis Country Club.
Cathy teaches every level player, but her patience and fun games make her especially popular with our younger juniors.
She is part of the well-known tennis playing Tully family from Pelham, New York. She played the junior circuit as a child and attended Marymount of Virginia College. Cathy was the Ursaline Tennis Coach before becoming Director of Tennis at Purchase.
Cathy was the coach of her sons, Jimmy and Marty. Jimmy won the New York State High School Boys Singles title and both boys played for Columbia University when their team won the Ivy League Championships.
Brad has a big heart to go along with his 6’6″ frame.
He is the director of USTA Eastern Junior Tournaments held at Sound Shore Indoor Tennis.
Brad was born and raised in the Bronx and played the Eastern Junior circuit. His “big serve” helped him play DI tennis at SUNY Binghamton where he majored in Philosophy. Brad spent two years playing satellites before returning to the area to begin his teaching career. He is presently the assistant pro at Brae Burn Country Club.
Martina is a terrific doubles player and coach as evidenced by her #1 rankings in NCAA and paddle tennis.
Born and raised in Banska Bystrica, Slovakis, Martina competed on the junior circuit before accepting a tennis scholarship to play at the University of South Alabama.
While at college, she excelled at doubles and won the NCAA Division 1 National Doubles Championships.
Martina has been teaching tennis at local country clubs and is currently at Willow Ridge Country Club in Harrison, NY. She coaches our USTA teams as well as our Junior Tennis clinics, including the High Intensity Training.
